This
year we will hold our annual Tootsie Roll Drive on Friday, September 21st,
and Saturday, September 22.d As most of you already know, the
purpose of the drive is to help the mentally handicapped. Last year we collected
over $8000. About ninety percent of this money is given to
local organizations that work with the handicapped. The remainder goes into a
statewide fund to help with a program designed to help the less severely
handicapped live and work in a setting outside the typical institutions.
We were able to help the Valley Sheltered Workshop in Batavia, the
Northeastern Illinois Special Olympics in St. Charles. The
Tootsie Roll Drive is probably the Knights of Columbus’ best-known
fund-raiser. It is certainly one our most worthwhile. Those of you who have
volunteered your time at the Special Olympics know that the money we take in
from this event is well spent. I
encourage all of you to donate an hour or two of your time on Friday or Saturday
or both days if you can. Have other family members participate as well. Many of
us have our wives and children join us. The children learn invaluable lessons
about helping others. Students can use the Tootsie Roll Drive to help meet the
community service requirements of the local high schools. The
work is not difficult. We do not use a hard sell approach to collect money and
we do not have anyone working in traffic intersections. All volunteers merely
stand near the entrance to businesses in Geneva and Batavia. The businesses have
been contacted prior to the drive and have given their approval for us collect
in front of their stores. Most people know about the drive and you will most
likely not have to say anything except thanks as you offer Tootsie Rolls to
those who donate. Please
help us make this our most successful drive yet. If you cannot spare the time,
but would like to make a donation to the drive, that would be appreciated as
well. Our success depends upon you. So please come out and help. You can sign-up
on-line or contact
Kevin Callahan at (630) 235-7158 to volunteer. You may
